Chastain Park’s new 2,600 square foot Tennis Center includes a reception area, pro shop, office space, 20-person community conference room, and ADA compliant restrooms and locker room facilities. A portion of the building was tucked into the site’s sloping hillside in order to take advantage of the earth’s natural insulating properties and reduce heating and cooling costs. A concrete roof terrace overlooking the tennis courts, provides ample gathering space for the community, while eliminating the need for additional paved surfaces elsewhere on the site. What was once a secondary point of entry is now the Park’s most prominent ‘gateway’ corner.
The new Chastain Park Tennis Center is the City of Atlanta’s first green recreational facility and served as a pilot building for the EarthCraft Light Commercial program, a regionally based, third-party verification program developed by the Southface Energy Institute to foster the greening of light commercial buildings.
